Chemical Reactions
Types of Reactions-Synthesis/Combination- When two or more reactants form a smaller number of products (essentially any reaction with less products and more reactants) Endothermic
Decomposition- When a smaller number of reactants form two or more products from a reaction (essentially any reaction with more products and less reactants) Exothermic Combustion- When a hydrocarbon consisting of carbon and hydrogen react with oxygen gas to combust to form carbon dioxide and water (usually anytime the products are carbon dioxide and water) Single Replacement- When a single cation or anion is replaced by a more reactive cation or anion in a reaction (usually consists of one compound and one ion and the ion is switched) Double Replacement- When multiple cations or anions switch places based on reactivity of the ions (like a single replacement but two compounds switch either cations or anions depending on how you view it) Acid/Base Reaction- A special double replacement where an acid (which is an ionic compound between polyatomic ions and H+ ions) and a base (which is a cation and OH- ions) to form a salt and water. Balancing Reactions--The Law of Conservation of Matter- "Matter cannot be created or destroyed only changed" -The Law of Conservation of Mass- "In a reaction the total Mass is conserved only distributed differently among the molecules involved" -The Law of Conservation of Energy- "Energy cannot be created or destroyed only transformed from one form to another" Balancing Reactions Powerpoint link |
